The spark that inspired this ministry was the gift of a shawl to Helen, which arrived after Josie's cancer diagnosis. Helen says “It arrived unexpectedly one January day & warmed me like no other gift has. As I wrapped it around my shoulders, I felt the hugs & prayers woven into it & was overwhelmed by such a simple, but profound deed. My shawl became a visible sign of God's love and the kindness extended to our family by countless people throughout Josie’s illness.”
The beginning of Shawls of Hope was delayed by Josie's prolonged recovery, but in the meantime, enthusiasm was conveyed to other women & as a result, shawl ministry was initiated at a church in Blackville, NB with amazing results. Then, unexpectedly Josie & Helen received the first shawl for their minstry .... before picking up their knitting needles! Barb Cameron, an avid knitter from Miramichi, who wanted to support their intentions, had prayerfully knit for them. The timing was perfect & Barb's shawl was given to a friend, scheduled to undergo cancer treatment. That presentation marked the birth of Shawls of Hope & within only six weeks, nine ladies were knitting & praying.
In two years, there are over 300 Shawls of Hope recipients ..... men, women & children who have been given shawls & blankets to comfort them in their time of need. In addition, through telephone conversations & emails, we have provided tips to assist other shawl ministries get established.
